Introduction

 The Institute of Corrosion (Icorr) provides internationally recognised training and certification for professionals in corrosion prevention, coatings inspection, and related disciplines. Their staged training framework caters to a wide range of experience, from those taking their first steps in the field, to seasoned experts seeking advanced credentials. This section aims to guide you through the nuances of Icorr’s three primary training levels, providing you with the insight needed to select and progress through the appropriate course for your career ambitions. 

Icorr Level 1: Foundations in Coatings & Corrosion Inspectio

Who is it for?

Icorr Level 1 is designed for newcomers to the coatings and corrosion inspection sector, or for those with limited experience seeking formal recognition of their capabilities. It is the ideal starting point for individuals who wish to develop a strong grounding in inspection techniques, health and safety, and industry standards. All students must have a minimum of 12 months of coating or painting industry experience.

ICORR LEVEL 2: INTERMEDIATE COATINGS & CORROSION INSPECTOR

Who is it for?

The Level 2 programme is tailored for professionals with prior experience—often Level 1 certified technicians, or those with equivalent field experience—who wish to deepen their technical knowledge and take on greater responsibility.


Course Content

Level 2 builds upon Level 1 foundations and introduces advanced inspection methods, enhanced problem-solving, and supervisory skills. Topics typically include:


  • The Fundamental Coating Inspection units covered in Level 1
  • Corrosion, Cathodic Protection and Coatings
  • Marine Coatings and IMO PSPC
  • Design and Construction
  • International Standards
  • Quality Management
  • Paint Testing
  • Soluble Salts
  • Specialist Tests
  • Coating Surveys
  • Environmental Unit and more.


Learning Outcomes

After completing Level 2, candidates will be able to:

  • Independently plan and execute coatings inspections
  • Analyse complex coating failures and propose solutions
  • Supervise and mentor less experienced inspectors
  • Interpret and apply industry standards and project specifications
  • Provide detailed reports and recommend corrective actions

ICORR LEVEL 3: SENIOR INSPECTOR & TECHNICAL AUTHORITY

Who is it for?

Level 3 is intended for highly experienced inspectors, managers, and technical authorities responsible for leading inspection teams, developing procedures, and providing expert advice. Typical candidates have significant field experience and may already hold Level 2 certification or equivalent.

Level 3 covers advanced technical, managerial, and strategic aspects of coatings inspection and corrosion control:
